Optimization of User Permissions

We are continuing to work on optimizing user permissions to ensure that escalation of privileges in the user cluster is impossible. In general, we are pursuing the goal of giving users the widest possible range of rights so as not to restrict the flexibility offered by the cluster-as-a-service. At the same time, we are, of course, first and foremost concerned about security and continue to evaluate where the sweet spot lies.

Monitoring

Centralized monitoring solution for comprehensive cluster monitoring.
Implementation of centralized monitoring across all guest- and infrastructure clusters.

Nodepool Resource Management

Extended cluster management functions for flexible configuration of the node pool.

This feature focuses on improving node pool management within clusters and detailed control over node resources. The system allows the definition of RAM and CPU allocations for each node, enabling better resource utilization and load balancing.

Policy Management

Advanced network and resource control mechanisms for guest clusters.

Implementation of strict policy controls including non-overridable network policies for traffic regulation, resource quotas and role-based access management in guest clusters.

Cluster Backup

Comprehensive backup and restore functionality for guest clusters.

Implementation of robust backup mechanisms for guest clusters, including the ability to create and restore cluster snapshots.

Cluster Scaling

Automated control plane scaling based on load metrics.

Develop automated scaling capabilities for control planes that respond to load changes and ensure optimal performance.

Advanced Observability

Resource Management

Comprehensive resource tracking and management interface.

Development of tools to track and manage Kubernetes resources across clusters, including the ability to view resources created in the guest cluster and potentially edit them directly from the Hangar UI.

Switch to the Operator Pattern

Now that Informer is already being used successfully for cache management in the backend, we are planning to switch to an operator pattern for managing user clusters and other resources. For this purpose, CustomResourceDefinitions will be introduced that reflect the desired configuration.

Creating access-restricted KubeConfigs for user clusters

There is a desire to create restrictive KubeConfigs for user clusters, for example for read access by users within the Hangar UI. The aim is to generate a KubeConfig that can be used for users and robot accounts based on the Kubernetes RBAC.

Update to Kubernetes versions 1.34, 1.33, 1.32

In order to continue to offer all current Kubernetes versions within Hangar, we will make the existing versions 1.33 and 1.32 as well as the planned release 1.34 available in Hangar for the provisioning of user clusters.

Nodepool Management Upgrade

We have fundamentally improved nodepool management to ensure better scalability and clarity. The new cache mechanism via Informer reduces the load on the Kubernetes API and significantly improves performance.

Role-based access management

With this version, we are introducing a comprehensive role concept:

  • SuperAdmin: Complete control over all clusters, including creation, deletion and infrastructure management
  • ClusterAdmin: Management of a specific cluster including user management and node scaling
  • ClusterUser: Access to the cluster overview for assigned clusters

Infrastructure Overview

The new Infrastructure Overview provides a comprehensive insight into the Infrastructure Cluster:

  • Display of cluster name and Kubernetes version
  • Status of the control plane components
  • Overview of physical and virtual nodes with status information
  • Warnings for insufficient resources (pending nodes)

Improved user management

The cluster creation and administration has been extended to include functions for user assignment:

  • Direct assignment of users during cluster creation
  • Role selection (admin/user) via a clear interface
  • Subsequent addition and removal of users in the cluster administration

Performance & Stability

Further improvements for a more robust platform:

  • Optimized certificate management for more security
  • Expansion of test coverage for higher quality
  • Various bug fixes for a more stable user experience

Online Playground Upgrade

Improved usability with additional features and guidance.

The Online Playground receives significant usability improvements, including a logout button, feedback mechanism and improved visibility of node pool management. A new roadmap button will be added to show future developments. A comprehensive tutorial system guides first-time users through the functionality of the tool.
