Open source monitoring software Icinga 2 released

With Icinga 2, the Nagios core has been replaced by its own monitoring core. Multithreading, cluster deployment and the use of different databases as a backend are now possible. Help and tools for new users can also be found in the documentation.
Icinga 2 is an open source monitoring system that can be used to actively or passively check the availability of computers, networks and services, and Icinga 2 can be used to create reports (SLA) and notifications about outages and performance. The monitoring software offers a scalable and expandable basis that also enables complex networks across multiple locations. The option of enabling more and more extensions for the application in the future was an important main criterion during development. The decision was made to abandon the Nagios core as the basis and to develop a new monitoring core instead. The use of multithreading has also greatly improved performance, and another key criterion is to ensure that the new version 2 remains compatible with the existing components of version 1. To make this possible, new components have been developed to resolve the differences between the versions. With Icinga 2, the modular structure of its configuration syntax makes the creation of configurations much more compact than with its predecessor. The creation of configurations via script has also been considered. Icinga 2 can now also be operated in cluster mode. Communication between the machines is carried out using a secure X509 SSL certificate. This also enables good scalability of the application in order to better coordinate checks and load distribution. In addition to documentation, the developers facilitate the migration to the new version with small tools for the migration, such as help with validation and syntax highlighting.
