Software-defined storage
Software defined storage is used particularly in virtualized data centers, as the data storage is separated from the hardware and only the SDS system has “contact” with the storage hardware. It sounds very tempting, with a software solution you can manage and control data storage. But is that true?
SDS promises a lot, namely scalability, virtual overall structure of the data, deduplication function and much more. If it really works like that, I’ll be a fan.
What is even more exciting is that snapshots, high-speed caching, thin provisioning and more can also be integrated, as everything is hardware-independent.
This saves costs and makes every controller happy, also because the storage system does not have to be replaced as often or employees do not have to retrain due to new hardware. And all this means that business operations can continue, no downtime!
Admittedly, software defined storage is not a new invention; critics call it old software wrapped in a nice new marketing coat. However, it has been significantly enhanced so that both small and large companies can cope with the challenges of rapidly growing technologies.
We like that!
