OSAD 2018: The open source conference with a star

Mercedes-Benz Tower Munich

We had been working towards the big day for a long time, and then the time had come: Open Source Automation Day 2018 took place on October 19.

The day started early for the ATIX crew: they were busy making the final preparations to give the participants a great reception at the Mercedes-Benz Tower in Munich. The more than 140 guests arrived at 8:30 a.m. and were first provided with goodie bags, coffee and breakfast.

The official starting signal was given shortly before 9: our CEO Mark Hlawatschek welcomed all participants. The participants were also given an exclusive preview of the new ATIX film, which will celebrate its official premiere shortly. The response was very positive and we are already looking forward to presenting it to you. But back to OSAD: After Mark had explained the two presentation tracks to the conference participants, some went to the business track and others to the technology track. A conference highlight awaited the audience in this track: Mike Place, Director of Engineering at SaltStack, gave a talk on event-driven automation. Highlights of the morning included the slots from Thomas Schweier (Head of Division at the Bavarian State Office for Digitization, Broadband and Surveying), Christian Stankowic (author, blogger and system engineer at SVA) and Timo Goebel (dmTECH GmbH). After so much information, our guests (and us too, of course 😉 ) had well and truly earned their lunch.

We enjoyed lunch and the wonderful view over the Bavarian capital in the best weather and interesting discussions.

Well fortified and refreshed, everyone set off for the afternoon session. This also offered the participants numerous highlights, such as the talks by Paul Puschmann (DevOps Engineer at REWE Digital GmbH), Dr. Jonas Trüstedt (Senior Consultant at ATIX AG), Evgeni Golov (Software Engineer at RedHat), Martin Alfke (CEO, example42), Lukas Plattner (Head of Linux Server Department and CISO, APA-IT GmbH) and Jens Schanz (Senior System Engineer, Müller Holding Ltd. & Co. KG).

At around 6 p.m., Mark officially bid farewell to all the speakers, sponsors and participants and thanked over 140 attendees. We then ended the evening together with good conversation and a drink or two. Of course, the view was particularly spectacular: the Mercedes-Benz Tower offers a 360-degree view of Munich and the participants were able to enjoy a fascinating view of the city at night. illuminated landmarks such as the Old Town Hall, the Olympic Tower and the Allianz Arena. The last guests left the location at around 8 pm. Together, the ATIX crew then cleaned up the remains of the day, which went very quickly thanks to the excellent teamwork. Tired, exhausted but completely satisfied, we all fell into our beds at home and treated ourselves to a good night’s sleep.

If you look at the content of the talks at Munich’s largest open source conference, you quickly realize that, in addition to IT automation, “containers” were the central topic of the Open Source Automation Day 2018. The speakers provided information on the latest developments and technologies in this area in particular. As a result, we are already excited to see what has happened between now and OSAD 2019.

Our heartfelt thanks go to our sponsors puppet, SUSE, Docker, confluent and uib as well as our media partner funkschau. We are delighted that you were there and hope to have you and your speakers on board again at OSAD 2019.
